We were honored to take an active part in the Homeless Town Hall Meeting that was hosted by the Downtown San Diego Partnership (DTSDP) on Monday. Heartfelt Helpings (formerly Loving Spoonfuls) has been partnering with the DTSDP to create a new program (the San Diego Meal Service Program) to better serve the homeless population in downtown San Diego. We presented the program to those who attended the Town Hall meeting. The program and our mission - to provide meals for those in need in a positive and respectful way with low impact on the surrounding community - was well received.
San Diego housing and transitional service providers will open their facilities to outside meal service providers, like Heartfelt Helpings, to prepare and serve meals on location. The DTSDP will be extending their website to create a centralized site and online calendar of meal service opportunities posted by the participating service providers. This creates an easy and simple way for meal service providers to register and sign up for a volunteer opportunity that meets their needs!
Shortly after its inception, Heartfelt Helpings has role modeled this preferred method of meal service delivery. By partnering with organizations that provide shelter and transitional services, we are able to focus our resources where they will have the most impact. Since July 2014, Heartfelt Helpings has delivered ~8,700 meal to those in need under the partnership model.
Of course, there were many other very important topics covered at the Town Hall Meeting. We are simply grateful to be a small part of the solution to hunger and homelessness in our community. Each day we are always inspired by the countless people here in San Diego and around the world that are making a difference ‘by being the change they wish to see in the world’.

Heartfelt Helpings was honored to be the charity of choice at the annual Get Together and Give Back event for the Faculty and Staff at San Diego State University.
The "give back" are beautiful holiday cards that were designed by the students from the SDSU design and graphics arts program filled with heartfelt sentiments from the Faculty and Staff. These cards will be sent to our troops who are deployed during this holiday season and to our homeless neighbors that Heartfelt Helpings serves in our community. This gift is so much more than words on a pretty card. To the recipient, this card is a symbol to them that someone cares, and when someone cares, it gives the gift of HOPE. Hope is a key ingredient in helping our homeless neighbors transform their lives.
Why did SDSU select Heartfelt Helpings as the charity of choice? Shortly after starting Heartfelt Helpings, we were introduced the Student Nutrition Organization and presented Heartfelt Helpings as a volunteer opportunity to prepare healthy meals for those in need. Several SNO members began volunteering at our regular weekly meal services at Neil Good Day Center, PATH Connections Housing and Doors of Change (homeless youth 18 to 24). Word spread to the Residence Advisors who then reached out to partner with us to create on-campus volunteer opportunities at several of the residence halls. Some RA’s helped with the funds for the food supplies, some of the students used their surplus meal program vouchers, and Heartfelt Helpings provided the supplies to ensure food safety standards were met, Together, we created several Light Up The Love events that resulted in hundreds of healthy sandwiches for our homeless neighbors.
Over the past two years we have enjoyed working side by side with the amazing young men and women from SDSU to make a difference in our community. We look forward to continuing to broaden our relationship with SDSU. Thanks to the Faculty and Staff for all that you do to help inspire, lead, and shape these young men and women into people who have compassion, who care, and who give their time to those less fortunate simply because it is the right thing to do.
